Kozhikode: India’s academic world has a new reason to celebrate. M. Abdul Fatah Noorani, a young scholar from Kerala’s Kozhikode, has achieved something remarkable. He has secured admission to the PhD program in Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies at New York University. Along with this, he has been awarded a record fellowship worth about ₹5.5 crore.
This funding reflects his strong academic ability. It includes three major fellowships from the US. These are the MacCracken Fellowship, the Dean’s Doctoral Fellowship, and the Dean’s Humanities Scholars Program. The package covers tuition, health insurance, and living expenses. This means he can focus fully on his research without financial stress.
His research topic connects religion with global issues. He will study the lives and deaths of Malayali Muslims living in Gulf countries. His focus will be on religious spaces and moral ecology. He will also examine these ideas in the context of sustainability and climate change.
